The Smith Lake Section 16 land is a treasure that should be preserved for future generations, and shared with the public as part of the Forever Wild Land Trust. It is a place where children can reconnect with nature, where they can marvel at the majesty of God’s creation, or see a bald eagle fly. If Forever Wild purchases this land, it will become either a nature preserve or a recreation area. The entire Southeast would enjoy a new public place that could include hunting, fishing, hiking, swimming, boating and/or outdoor education.
As part of Forever Wild this land could fulfill its purpose. It was set aside in 1819 for the benefit of the schools, and it has so many lessons to teach and so many gifts to give. The October 2012 issue of Outdoor Alabama lists communities that experienced millions of dollars in economic boosts because of Forever Wild, but their best argument in favor of Forever Wild is, “Study after study shows that the greatest barrier to Americans going out and enjoying the outdoors is lack of access. This is especially true for our children.”
Forever Wild pays up to appraised value for the land, so the children will have both money for their schools and a place they can enjoy with their children and grandchildren. We have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to create a legacy for future generations. Land like this is a rare and precious resource, and you can help save it. Forever Wild is a competitive process with many lands vying for limited funding.
